What Filtration Can — and Can’t — Do
EPA identifies source control and clean-air ventilation as the most effective starting points for improving indoor air. Filtration can be a useful supplement. Depending on the equipment, filters and air cleaners may reduce airborne particles such as dust, pollen, smoke particles, and some particles associated with mold.
That does not mean filtration solves a mold problem, removes every gas or odor, or guarantees relief from allergies or asthma. The product and the pollutant both matter.
HVAC Filters and Air-Cleaning Equipment
Central HVAC filters work when air is moving through the heating and cooling system. Other in-duct air-cleaning technologies may be available depending on the equipment and installation. The correct option should match the HVAC system and the indoor air concern rather than simply choosing the highest-sounding rating.
A Note About UV Air Treatment
Ultraviolet technology is sometimes included in residential air-cleaning discussions, but its capabilities need to be described carefully. EPA notes that research has not established that UV light effectively removes gases in portable residential air cleaners, and some UV or ionizing devices may have ozone-related concerns depending on their design.
ALERT: Do not publish germ-killing percentages, virus-removal claims, 'sterilizes the air,' or similar UV claims unless the exact installed product is confirmed and the claim is supported by two official sources or qualifying manufacturer technical documentation.
Start With the Problem You Want to Address
The useful question is not simply, 'What is the strongest filter?' It is what airborne concern the homeowner wants to reduce, what the existing HVAC system can accommodate, and whether filtration is the appropriate tool.
